Devlog #3 - It's Time to get Technical


It's time for another Spades Budokai devlog and I hope you are as hyped up as I am! The last devlog focused on the lore behind Spades Budokai. I basically talked about what the world was all about and a bit about the playable characters. This time I want to talk about techs and the work I've been putting towards getting them in the game so let's start shall we?

Within the world of Spades Budokai, tricksters can use special skills called techs. Techs are sold by various suppliers and each of them correspond to a suit. A tech can be used in battle by spending the appropriate amount of books, by playing the required card, or by spending the specified number of energy points (EP). Proper use of these techs can be the difference between victory and failure.


Bob looks hurt...No worries when you have the heal tech!

During my pen and paper days, I created three techs for each suit for a total of twelve and I am currently going through and adding some of them into the prototype. The first tech I added was heal which allowed the tricksters to heal for the damage they would have dealt. It wasn't that hard to implement and allowed me set a standard for setting up my techs.


Rank boost...for when you need an extra oomph!

Each tech is identified by an id which starts with a letter corresponding to its suit followed a three digit number. Heal's ID is "H000" with the 'H' standing for hearts. Another tech that was implemented is "D000" or rank boost which adds the card's rank to the trickster's attack power. I thought this was a good system to keep up with my techs within the game and it's working pretty well.
